Hello, friends! It’s Dawn McVey here to share some a few projects today and I have a fun card trio to tell you about! I always think it’s interesting how inspiration works and where it can come from. Sometimes, the tiniest idea can grow into something really big and fun, and that’s kind of what happened here.
If you follow me on Instagram, then maybe you’ve seen my vintage coffee tin full of colorful pens that I use to mark in my Bible. One day, a sage green pen ended up next to a pinky-lavender pen and I loved that combo so much! I pulled the pens out and put them on my studio table to remind me of the color pairing. A few days later, we were at Old Navy, and there was an end cap flip flop display and right next to each other were hanging rows of flip flops in that same green and pinky-lavender combo! And that, my friends, is how this card set started!
I gathered up some card stock and inks in the colors I wanted to use. I added in the deeper plum-y color for interest and then just got busy playing with random die cuts and stamps that either, I hadn’t used in a long time and wanted to, or goodies that I can’t quit using because I’ve been loving them so much! I think the resulting card set is really fun and will be a great addition to my card stash!
PRO TIP: Try die cutting that Capsule Filigree Borders frame and laying it on top of a panel of card stock that’s been embossed with the Pretty Picado embossing folder! Such a fun base layer for WHATEVER you want to start piling on top!
In this case, I added a strip of card stock with a sentiment stamped on it from Scripted Sentiments and then added a lacy layer that I cut out with a Pretty Picado Borders die. Lastly, I added some enamel dots and buttons for a finishing touch.
PRO TIP: Use your buttons! If you’re like me, you still have hoards of them tucked away, that you haven’t used in ages, but they’re such a sweet and interesting addition!
PRO TIP: It’s ok to mix embellishments!! You don’t have to JUST use enamel dots or JUST use buttons! Use them both! Just remember to use an odd number of them! It’s a common rule in design, that odd numbers are just more visually appealing, so you can see here that I used five total. Three on one side and two on the other. Also, putting them on opposite sides helps create some balance.
Next up, oh gosh, this one is fun and so simple and I love that it sort of has a retro, preppy feel!
PRO TIP: I cut strips of card stock in my three chosen colors and then glued them to a Capsule Basics die cut. Then, I ran it through the die cutting machine with the Capsule Basics die again, and let the die do the work of trimming off the edges for me. This creates a nice, clean, polished edge!
I layered it on a Capsule Star Studded Borders die, and the used the Large Linked Labels embossing folder for a tiny bit of detail and interest on the background.
Lastly for this card, I used the Seed Catalog Background Stamp and an A2 Stitched Scallops die to create the background panel, and then layered on the sentiment from Scripted Sentiments along with some little bits and bobs…..a sentiment strip of card stock, a plain strip, a scalloped/dotted strip off of one of the Pretty Picado Banner dies and a few more buttons. I love how scrappy and fun this is, and it’s also just sweet and simple!
