Hi all! It’s been such a long time since I’ve had a chance to do a Make & Tell Tuesday. Sometime early this summer things got super crazy and there was just no squeezing it in. We are slowly getting caught up, and I’m excited at the possibility of having a little more time for things like this again!
So today I have a Make & Tell video showing how to create a couple of different wood effects to go along with our Shiplap Builder die. These are easy to do, and so realistic!
I’ll show you two different looks – one a more rustic, mixed wood look, and the other a pretty whitewash effect.

I used the whitewash planks to create a pretty chevron background. I finished this panel into a card by clustering lots of Mimosa Musings and BotaniCuts Pine branches around the outer edges, and added a Written in Ribbons Holiday sentiment. I added some sparkle to the branches with the glass glitter from our Hug in a Mug Embellishment kit.
I also finished off the rustic panel into a holiday card. I used the Fresh Air Window Frame die to add the window frame. I also added a window box by double-cutting a Shiplap Builder plank to create a shorter plank. I backed the window frame cuts with vellum and added some faux snow to the sills. Some snowflakes and greenery cut with the Frosty Corners and BotaniCuts Pine Bough dies finish off the scene.
Here is the video where I show how to create the backgrounds on both of these cards…
I hope you enjoyed! Thanks for stopping by!

Gosh, these are both such beautiful cards! I especially love how your chevron background turned out. Fun to see your inky fingers in the video, too 🙂
Gorgeous!!
Enjoyed watching these cards being made. I love them!
Beautiful cards! I’ll be checking out the video! Love the Shiplap Builder Die!
Heartfelt thanks for today’s Make &Tell video, Betsy!💕 It was just the inspiration that I needed. All of the supplies I need are waiting on my desk. Your tips always inspire me to get started! 💗
BEAUTIFUL WORK, Betsy!!! SO GLAD you were able to find some time to do this for us today! I ALWAYS LOVE seeing YOUR WORK! THANK YOU for the tips & tricks with the Ship Lap Die!!! LOVE this die! You ALWAYS come out with THE BEST DIES!!! ;)<3 (P.S. I am currently working on a card with my Greetery order! FINALLY, found some time to play!!! ;))
Love your color combinations and technique videos Betsy! You have an amazing eye for color and textural combinations. Adore these dies. Once again – stunning! 🤩
Oh my gosh (hits head with hand) – the very fact that you started off with blending a piece of yardstick BEFORE cutting all the die pieces was genius! One of the reasons I don’t want to use the shiplap often is because of having to blend each die cut! – this is truly one of those “duh” moments for me! Thanks!
Cardstock – not yardstick – lovely spellchecker!
Thanks for sharing more ways to color the shiplap and how to make those backgrounds, i am loving that die!
Oh my goodness, I was SO happy when I stopped by and saw that you shared this video. Thank you! I’ve had a super busy month but every so often I’ve thought about your awesome shiplap backgrounds (TRUE!) and you how created the different looks. I don’t know if you can call shiplap gorgeous, but your’s are! This is one technique I’m definitely going to try! Double thanks!! Oh, I was so excited about the shiplap, I also meant to add that your cards are BEAUTIFUL! 😊❤️🎄
Oh my! These two cards are so gorgeous. You gave us much inspiration for that Shiplap Builder die set. I loved the dies and couldn’t think how to make it more realistic. This video was a perfect tutorial on how to do that. Thank you so much. Your gentle way and calming voice is so soothing. And in these times it is even more appreciated. Thank you.
I’m a visual person, and sincerely appreciate your videos. I have quite a bit of difficulty with shading, so seeing and hearing how you made your decisions is valuable to me. Your cards are lovely! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise.
