Good morning and happy Tuesday! Last week I promised a video on the watercolored lemons from the card set I posted on our More Fresh Air Inspiration post.
This is a fun technique that uses solid image stamps, stamped with Distress Oxide inks, to create faux watercolor. It’s fun and easy – easier than starting with outline images, in my opinion, because much of the work is already done for you with the stamping. You’re just adding in some blends with a sort of wet-on-wet technique often used in traditional watercoloring. The entire process is done with Oxide inks – no special watercolors are needed. Just a paintbrush, your oxide inks, and water. Oh, and your favorite solid-image stamps of course! I used Lemon Blossom.

Here’s the video for you!
To finish off my card with the full lemon pattern background, I added a sentiment from the Written in Ribbons set, and a black and white striped strip stamped with the Painterly Stripes Background stamp. For the Hello card, I created a collage sentiment by combining a few different elements – the Slim Alphabet die, a sentiment from Signed & Sealed, and another from Written in Ribbons. The different pattern strips were cut from another lemon panel, along with some stripes and plaids done with the Painterly Stripes Background.
This was a fun technique – I’m already wondering what other images from my collection might work really well for this! What would you use?

The Fir and Foliage Pine Trees would be an easy place to start! Awesome technique and finished look! Love watching you select and mix color!
Jan – I think F&F No. 2 would work great!
I enjoyed that technique. I was wondering if the “bottled up” and “just mason around” stamps would work with this technique. Thanks for the video.
I think both of those sets would work great for this!
Beautiful technique.
Thanks for the inspirational video! Love that look and am anxious to try it 🙂
Loved the faux watercolor look. What brush did you use. Brand and #. Couldn’t tell if it was 6 or 9….lol. Thanks so much for sharing a new technique to me. I love watercolor cards.
Hi Susan! I used a No 6 Princeton Neptune watercolor brush. It’s one of my favorites – they are very nice brushes if you like something with a little more “spring” than some of the softer watercolor brushes out there.
Excellent video and the panel was incredible! It is so pretty that it could easily stand alone with just a sentiment so as not to hide it’s beauty. Your soft voice and water coloring techniques have me mesmerized! Well done, Betsy!
BEAUTIFUL WORK, Betsy! This technique just gives me a whole new way to look at my solid stamps! What stamps would I use??? Fleur Impressions & the Robin & Wren Set! 😉 THANK YOU for the INSPIRATION TODAY, Betsy!!!! Have a BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!! ;)<3
Thank you Betsy for sharing the faux watercoloring, your card turned out so pretty! I wonder how the Pine Blossom would look, I was thinking of the stand alone flower in the set. I just wanted to add that I’ve been working with the Top Down set and had so much fun. I LOVE everything you design! Happy Tuesday!
Oh my! Just gorgeous and I need to try!!!!
WOW!! Can’t wait to try this, Betsy! The end result is just stunning. Beautiful cards!
Positively magical, Betsy! I would never have dreamed of letting those Distress Oxide color combinations mix to create such lovely faux watercoloring! I can’t wait to try it with the Lemon Blossom set this afternoon. I think it would also be lovely on the Fir and Foliage trees, Just Mason Around, Bottled Up, and all of your beautiful florals! Thank you for the wonderful video. Celebrating ONE WHOLE YEAR of gorgeous inspiration from The Greetery!💗
