Today I have a video for you that’s been a bit slow in coming! Back when the BotaniCuts Succulents dies were released I promised a how-to watercolor video and had not had a chance to put that together for you until now!
In this video I’ll show the method I use for watercoloring these layered diecut succulents. I went a little crazy watercoloring a whole bunch of them when they were first released, and had so much fun playing around with different color combinations. I kept track of my color combos and snapped some pics of them so that I could share them with you here.
The technique I used in the video is pretty much the same no matter which color combination you choose to do them in. I encourage you to be creative and play around with colors – that’s the most fun part!
Here is the watercolor video…
I also have a bonus project and video! After watercoloring more of the succulents for the video, I wanted to put them to use on a project. I came up with these fun Succulent Garden Slider Notes. They’re easy to assemble and use a basic oval die to create the “bowl”.
Here is the how-to video…
Also, did you notice anything new in the Succulent Garden Notes project? I’m sneak peeking a few brand new stand alone dies that we’ll be releasing this week as a small add-on release. These new dies will be introduced in full on the blog tomorrow morning (Thursday) and will go up for sale at 10 am EDT Thursday along with re-stock of all of the items that are currently sold out in the shop!

Woo-hoo! I was just thinking about trying out my succulents die with some watercolors. Thanks for the inspiration. Excited to hear that there will be a mini-release of some dies. Your work is so beautiful Betsy. I truly appreciate the inspiration you provide.
How gorgeous are these succulents?!! Love that vase and fun slider design! Beautiful cards!
Thanks so much for the video. I love learning more about water coloring. I will get my succulent dies out again and try this. Please make a video with the little boy and the umbrella. I would love to know how to make the reflection in the rain.
You really make the succulents come to life with watercolor! Beautiful! Happy to have a few new elements to embellish and add interest!! Thank you Betsy!
What a lovely post. I love watercolor, but have no talent yet to create with it. Thanks so much for the lovely video, it may help me! i also love the samples you created in your book, which is a beauty in itself. Have a lovely week Betsy.
Wow, nice video. I have these succulents and think I can do this. Excited about the mini release.
You’ve shown so many fabulous watercoloring tips! I love watercolors but haven’t gotten confidence in doing it myself so thanks so much for the video. The slider is a wonderful idea too. Looking forward to seeing what’s in your mini release!!
Betsy, I LOVE what you’ve created! I LOVE the different colored succulents too! STUNNING!!! AND YES, I DID notice the NEW PIECES you’ve showed us! CAN’T WAIT to see EVERYTHING in full!!! 😉 <3 FABULOUS VIDEOS TOO!!!
Love the slider! If only I had your immense talent, this would be the perfect card for my daughter who loves succulents!! I’ll be watching this video over and over until I have gotten it right! Thank you for sharing your talents
Melissa – you could do this same thing without watercoloring the succulents if that’s intimidating for you! You can cut them from shades of green cardstock to make it super simple, or do some ink blending. I did that on the Terrarium treat boxes I did back in April and they turned out really cute that way, too!
Hi Betsy! I SO enjoyed your videos. Moon glow will be on order. I’ve learned by first following your examples, then with more knowledge and practice in hand, I venture on my own. I’m very grateful that you’ve shared the videos because without your help, I’m not sure I would have tried watercoloring. The bowl – oh my gosh, how creative! Now we can put our succulents in a container, ready for the table! I Love it! I have a QUESTION PLEASE!? 😊🖌 What brand and size is your “ mop” brush? I’ve had trouble finding one in my local craft stores. Thank you again and I’m so excited for the mini release!
Hi again! I got to thinking about my question in the previous comment. Is the brush you’re using to apply water, the #6 Princeton Neptune? It looked so much bigger (close-up) in the video that I thought it was a mop brush. Can you help please?
Ok I cant stop looking that this post. I am in love with your water coloring. How ever please please please tell me where did you get that Mason jar plate that you are using for your paint pallet? I love that…
Hi, I’ve seen them on Amazon, in different colors, white, blue, green.
OMG..stunning!!
I have loved succulents for 50 years! This is my new favorite die set. I’ve already made cards with it, but I really appreciate your videos. My next ones will be even better. My Macra-Made fillers are on the way, too (along with other things of course). Yaaaaaaaaay!!!
