Good morning! I hope you all had a restful holiday weekend and had a chance to spend some time with family.
Are you ready to kick off our Week of Watercolor featuring the Hand in Hand stamp set?
In today’s video, I’ll be sharing some tips of things to think about before you even pick up your brush. I’ll be talking about different lighting effects and how they can affect your color choices. I also show you how to create some value sketches to help you determine light and shadow areas of your images — something you can refer to while painting. I’ll wrap up the video with a book recommendation!
Tomorrow we get to actually start painting! 😉

I’m so excited to start this watercolor painting week. I need all of the help I can get. lol Thanks so much for helping us.
Great information! Can’t wait to get started, see you Tomorrow!
Yay! I’m so excited about this series! 😃
Thanks for taking the time to teach and help our creativity blossom. The book you recommended is on my to buy list, the flick through, your explanation and recommendation really helped me decide that I do need this book. Thank you!
Oh Betsy this is great! So looking forward to learning some more about my favorite medium– watercolor. With your very first release you are introducing us to a larger world of card-making.– I’ve been having fun exploring oxide inks, and now the watercolors. Thanks!
A SUPER VIDEO, Betsy! I can’t wait either, to begin learning from you! Will there still be a release this month too???? I’m waiting for that too! 😉 <3
Hi Becky! There is not a release this month – we are not doing monthly releases, but more likely every-other month to start out. Our next release will take place the latter part of June. 🙂
THANKS BETSY!!! ;)<3
Some good tips! Thank you! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series and the book you recommended looks like it would be wonderful to browse through and just enjoy the artwork as well as learn about light. It’s on my list!!
I am looking forward to the painting.
Thank you again for the very informative video , Betsy! Wow, I never really thought about light that in depth before. Thank you so much!
Thanks for doing these videos Betsy. I ordered the Mission Gold watercolors today! I wanted to ask you if you used the sandpaper to “rough up” the wells the paint goes in as well or just the larger mixing areas in the lid and the bottom? Thanks!
Hi Donna! I did not rough up the wells, only the larger mixing areas. I think you’re going to love them – they’re so vibrant!
Thanks for sharing this video, Betsy. Seeing how you prepared for the direction of light and how cool and warm light affects color choices is so helpful–even with pencil coloring.
Yes – the concept totally covers all mediums. In fact, in the book I recommended, many of his works are not watercolors, many of them are done with oils. But you’re right – it covers everything from pencils, watercolors, etc, etc… It’s kind of hard to get your mind out of the whole concept that white is just white, red is just red, etc…in the real world our eyes and minds don’t see color that way, we just have to learn to recognize it! (which is easier said than done 🙂 )
An eye-opening video…thanks so much! I wonder how many of us did the “aaah” as you explained some things…I know I did! : ) Looking forward to the next video!
I’m enjoying this! And I have a link for you for a free download of the gamut mask: https://mypaintingclub.com/uploads/images/GamutMask.pdf
Also a link to a book that helped me tremendously. Although it’s written for Copic markers, I think its principals apply to whatever color medium you’re using.

Hi Betsy ! Great advice! Can’t wait to put all of your ideas into practice. Iris,SavedbyGrace
Good tips, thanks Betsy! Light and shading doesn’t always come natural to me, so I think your idea of using pencil to draw first is very helpful. I’ve started to do this more with stamping too, instead of just winging it. My random stamping doesn’t always look how I want, so I recently cut up some copy paper for this purpose to practice my layout first so I don’t waste my good cardstock.
Hi Betsy! I’m a little late getting started but so excited. Since I have no knowledge about watercoloring, I followed your recommendations & ordered all my supplies. (& finally Hand in Hand). Everything has arrived & am very interested in the book about lighting & color. I remember something in a movie about Johannes Vermeer & The Girl with the Pearl Earring. Mr Vermeer asked a house maid what colors she saw when looking at a cloudy sky. It was a very teachable moment when the maiden discovered so many different colors- grays, blues, pinks, yellows etc. It’s hard to convey my deepest appreciation in just words, but I am sincerely grateful to you. You have broadened my world. Thank you so much!
P.S. I meant to add that I had outpatient surgery on your 1st day of painting. (Spinal stimulator on a trial basis- for 5 days thereafter ). Everything has healed, I have all of my supplies & ready to start. I usually don’t open up with private information but I feel like I’m sharing this with a longtime, crafting friend. In the meantime I had SO MUCH FUN making new colors with the oxides. For me, card making has become exciting, all over again!
